Sh*t or Get off the Pot!

(Ok, so I apologize for the title of today’s post.  But it’s much more attention grabbing than something about making great decisions…and I’m not overthinking or overediting things today!)

Last week I had the pleasure of working with Debbye Cannon, the BizMom Mentor (www.bizmommentor.com) to rethink and revamp my workspace at home.  Before Debbye arrived I thought–I’m doing pretty good here.  I don’t think there’s too much to change.

Boy, was I wrong.

Once Debbye got going, it was clear that I was trying to drive my fun & sporty business on some country backroad systems.  I needed to get my office space running like a well maintained highway so I could really see how this baby can fly!

But I had another, more unexpected, AHA as well.  It was about the power of decisions.

Now, I actually pride myself on being a very decisive and focused person.  But when I was standing there holding onto some object in my office and Debbye asked…does it stay or go…I found myself overthinking things.  I couldn’t decide.  About something as simple as a candle holder or a binder from something I’d done in the past.  Interesting.

About mid morning, I made an internal shift.  I started looking at everything (and I do mean everything…every object, every file, every piece of paper) through a new filter:  Does this item represent where I’m going or where I’ve been?

I started making very fast, almost instantaneous decisions about everything and the momentum picked up.

Since work on the office has been completed, I’ve noticed a carryover effect.  I am making very quick, clear, focused and solid decisions in many areas of my life.  I realized…I am “the boss”.  How cool is that?!  I get to decide what stays and goes…in my space, in my calendar, in by business, in my homelife.

I know this doesn’t read very profound!  But the thing is, it has eliminated DELAY.  It has eliminated the ’should it stay or should it go’ back and forth dance that would cost me minutes, hours or sometimes days.

The ability to make powerful and joyful decisions is a discipline and a skill.  And one that is essential to success.

So, I invite you to look around your world today.  Ask yourself : Which decision leads me where I want to go?  and follow that lead.

Very cool! Next time I need to do some uncluttering, I will ask myself – Does this item represent where I’m going or where I’ve been? It’s just so clear when you put it like that!

What an absolutely fab question! I found it on HappySimple and came over to have a read. I started using it and man, it has cleared out so much stuff linked to other stuff and people and they just went too!

Thank you
